Literature
Textbook: Elements of Literature, Second Course, published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.
Through the reading of short stories, novels, and plays students learn the various literary techniques used by authors and how those elements affect plot development.
We will cover several units in the literature text as well as reading William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
Students are also required to meet outside reading requirements as part of their grade for Literature. 8th graders are required to read 3 books per quarter from the Accelerated Reading Upper Level book list and successfully pass tests. Due dates for these tests are given to students prior to the beginning of each new quarter. Students who do not take a test by the due date will receive a zero for the test. I do allow students to replace one low test grade per quarter by reading a fourth book and passing the AR test.
Students also receive a grade for Library each quarter. This grade counts as a test grade in Literature for report card purposes.
The grading for Literature is 30% homework completion and 70% test scores.
Semester exams will be given in December and May.
